IPod Classic Cannot Restore or Erase HD

Reply by customerservice

Working on iPod Classic 5th Gen. When plugged in, it takes some time for iTunes to recognize it. Then I get a popup message that the iPod us corrupt. After downloading the proper software from ITunes to Restore, the Classic will not go through with the Restore process and Error 1434 message pops up. I saw an article on Apple's Support site showing how to "erase" the iPod's hard drive when this sort of thing happens, but the hard drive will not erase. When attempting to erase the drive (with the Mac's Drive Utility) I get another popup error saying the drive cannot be erased because of an input/output issue. Does anyone know for sure if this is a hard drive issue? The iPod Classic does display the Menu on the screen and you can set the time/date, etc. But there is no other content such as music or video available. And the sync function does not work to put any on through iTunes. Unit will not do a hard reset by pressing Menu/Play but will do a soft reset with Menu/Select. Of course to no avail I suspect because there is no content on the drive. When viewing Info in Disk Utility it states drive is unformatted and formatting to the recommended Extended/Journaled is impossible. Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

the reason why i got the error 1434 was, that the drive was password protected. Don't ask me why, i believe it was because i interrupted an format utility with a reset ( The iPod hard disk was connected with an adapter to the IDE of my PC ). To get rid of the passwords i used HDDerase from the Ultimate Boot CD. After that the passwords where gone and the drive was low level formated. Dont be to nervous with HDDerase its a DOS utility with no status bar no nothing and it took one and a half hour to format a 60 GB drive.

Thanks for the reply! In this particular case however, the hard drive is not password protected.

I get the apple icon when first activated but it disappears and red circle with a red x in the middle appears. What is my problem?

@customerservice-- Yes, (from what I have seen from working on these) it would seem that the hard drive has gone bad. When the iPod is starting up, place it to your ear to hear any heavy clicking noises. This would mean the drive has gone bad. If you hear basic humming/whirling, the hard drive should be okay.

@wisenwealthy-- The red X on a 6 Gen iPod classic means the hard drive has failed and will no longer work. On earlier models, it would show the "Sad iPod" icon.

HI GUYS,

The Problem is the same with me too. I did try the link provided below the red 'X' on screen. I tried restore and format apart from erasing. None worked. The persons in iStore (Chennai, India) askeed me to change with a new piece of same @ ~$200. Is it all that I can do with mine. I did neglect the clicking sound of the hard disk even during the warranty period. Its tough now to keep my iPod idle. I am in no mood to invest on ipod classic when Touch is around. If anyone can help me come out of this problem it would be of great help.

I have an Ipod classic(160 GB). It has been malfunctioning for quite some time.

1. I never was able to stoer more than 35 gb og songs.

2. It frequently hangs up on the "pretext" 'Analyzing gapless playback information'

Immediate issue at hand is that the ipod says its corrupt.when i try to restore it, the message "Error 1434" pops up. wehn i try to erase through disk utility, posix error:input output error shows up. when i try to partition or verify, it simply doesn't finish.

when i tried diskutil and fdisk in terminal mode (MAC OSX 10.6.3 ), it doesn't complete and "error 5:input output error" is displayed.

I am trying to erase through zero out data, but estimated time shows 2 days 11 hours.

I cant conclude the hd is dead because i can otherwise access the ipod contents and also, access the ipod contents through explorer, though i am not able to copy anything into it.

Any, (ANYTHING at all) help would be appreciated.

My iPod Classic 160 GB was and has been working perfectly for a really long time (a year)... but then when I tried to connect it to my Mac, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupt and to restore it. The restore failed and so did trying to use disk utility to reformat the iPod hard drive. It doesn't make any sense that the iPod worked perfectly before re-connecting it and now it's dead because I tried to connect it to my computer again.

I booted windows 7 on my MacBook and reformatted my iPod to exFat and restored my iPod in iTunes while booted in Windows 7. I did an initial sync in windows.

I rebooted into Mac OS 10.6.8 and synced my full iTunes library! Pretty strange that windows had no problem reformatting and restoring my iPod Classic and nothing worked at all from Mac OS. Apple must have jacked something up. I'll be keeping it Windows formatted from here on out.
