So, I'm trying to help a friend diagnose her macbook 13" from 2007 that's been out of commission for over a year. Boots to the tragic white screen with either a folder icon with a blinking question mark or the other equally devastating "not allowed" logo (circle with a line through it).
Here is what I've already tried...
1. Tried to T boot to my G4PPC Powerbook to run Drive Genius 2.1 and disk utility. Not recognized by the powerbook but the Firewire screensaver came on the macbook's screen verifying the connection.
2. Booted directly from disk using Drive Genius and the app couldn't find a hard drive in the computer.
3. Reset PVRAM
4. Used Macbook's OSX Install disk to run hardware test under deep scan with no problems reported.
5. Tried to reinstall OSX to cover possible corrupt system install but still found no drive to load onto.
6. Used X boot to force OSX boot with no success.
OK, so I'm thinking its simply in need of a new hard drive but I don't think I can rule out a bad logic board or connection with the drive. Thought I would check with my Mac peers first. My friend doesn't have a lot of money so any recommendations or advise would be helpful.
iFixit is an awesome community that has helped me keep my 6yr old G4 runnning smooth and clean. Thanks in advance for any help given.
