My daughter was using her Mac Book laptop, when it just went to a very bright screen. Mouse moves slowly, you can see it but difficult to place correctly. Any idea what the problem might be?

Try booting from the OS DVD and see if the performance is the same. If it is, then it's most likely a hardware issue. If not, then it's a software problem. Using something like Tech Tool Pro or DiskWarrior would be my first choice to try to fix a software issue. Reinstalling the OS (Archive and Install option) would be another avenue.
