ipod 30gb video. stereo sound not working after headphone jack replacement

Reply by kilbot

Hi

I just replaced my headphone jack cause one earphone was not working through it. It seems to have worked perfectly but now I seem to have lost stereo sound. Both earphones are working but I cant hear the second guitar in some songs. Most noticeable when the song has a part where there is only one guitar playing at a time and it is totally silent. Do you think I damaged it during repair or was the replacement headphoe jack faulty? Any opinions welcome.

Cheers.

You must have inadvertently broken the 'ground' (common to both the left and right channels) path at some point in the audio circuitry. This will cause you to hear only the audio that is NOT common to both the left and right channels, i.e. the stuff placed in the center of the stereo image. (Vocals and solo instruments are usually placed there.) The most likely problem within the iPod would be at or near the headphone jack -- breaking the connection to the 'sleeve' (longer shaft part) of the headphone plug. (The very end of the plug -- the 'tip' -- is the left channel; the next metal piece of the plug -- the 'ring' -- conducts the right channel. The 'sleeve' is the common return path for both channels.)

Before you re-open your iPod to look for a broken connection, try listening with another pair of two of headphone/earphones. If the headphone's/earphone's ground wire is broken or if that wire's internal connection to the 'sleeve' of the headphone plug is damaged, you will experience the same 'loss of center image' effect.
