Can this be rescued???

Reply by petercoupe

Hi all,

I bought this neat 14" G3 iBook recently - as a non-worker - and when I took it apart I found this damage to the board.

I fancy having a go at a repair (cheaper than a whole new board) but would appreciate someone telling me to either 'do it like this' or 'don't waste your time!'

Keep on tearin'

Peter

...additional...having had a good look around with a magnifier and torch...

the damage seems to be where the power leads join the board (from the 'on' button on the casing). I think someone has tried to solder the leads back onto the circuit board - and clearly failed!

Is there another way to get into the power system?

Or can I 'hot wire' it to start in another way?

I'd really like to get this up and running because the case/screen/ everything else is in pristine condition, and looks like it was damaged very early in its life.

any help, of course, greatly appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure as I've never messed around with this board, but iFixit does sell the logic board you would want http://www.ifixit.com/iBook-Parts/iBook-...

From the picture though it's hard to tell what has happened to the power connection. I imagine that's the only place where power enters the board, I don't know for certain though, sorry.

Hi

Thanks for the input. From what I can see it looks like the 'power in' socket has been removed from the board, and an attempt made to solder the power leads direct to the board.

I think if I had a circuit diagram I would be able to install a new owe socket.

I have asked a friend to send over a dead board so I can study the power socket location - I'll keep you all posted!
