iBook G3 (32 Meg Vram) starts to bright screen after logic board replacement

Reply by Barrybear

My iBook developed a problem with the logic board where it would not start up at all no tone black screen. Trouble shooting pointed to a bad Logic board. But with the replacement board the iBook gives a tone and I can hear the HD which sounds normal, but never shows anything on the screen except light. I have reset PRAM and PMU, tried to start from disc.

Any ideas???? I really want my Mac back......

Hmm, not sure about tone but display might be broken?

Maybe your logic board hasn't been put in right or maybe the new one doesn't work?

Try checking the cables that lead to the display, it looks like the display is getting power, but not getting signal. I had this problem with my 17" Studio display. try connecting the iBook to an external display via the mini-vga to VGA adaptor. to verify this. It sounds like that should solve the problem. also, make sure that the display data cable is in the socket all the way, and that there is no damage/frays to it.

First thing to do is to lift up your ibook keyboard and check if the video connector is well seated in his socket. The connector is located near the ram slot.

Then, as chrisgreen63 says, connect the ibook on an external display to check the video graphic chip (problematic on many ibook G3). If you get video on the external display then the motherboard should be good.

If the video connector is well seated and if you get video on the external display then:

- the video cable is not well connected to the LCD panel or

- the video cable is faulty or

- the LCD panel is faulty

To check the connection to the LCD display, unscrew the 4 littles torx screws at the two sides of the ibook display, use a smooth plastic guitar pick to separate the LCD cover from the LCD assy beginning by the top part of the screen, take off 4 small philips screws from the sides off the LCD metal shield, take off the metal shield and you'll reach the video cable socket. Reseat the cable in the connector and boot the ibook to check if there's video acivity on the screen. If not, the cable or the LCD itself is faulty.

did you get the logic board new or used? if its used, it may have a bad graphics card
