Beer in unibody Macbook keyboard - what to do?

Reply by krisss

Hi,

A couple of months ago my Macbook got some beer poured over the keyboard. I must admit I could have handled it better - I only turned it off, dried it with paper (while holding it upside down) and kept it off for a day or so. When I turned it on, it worked fine, but the keys were kind of sticky.

It still works fine, the keys are no longer sticky, but sometimes when the weather is humid, the keys get sticky again.

Should I open up and clean it? And if so, what guide can I follow?

Thanks in advance :-)

It is gonna be tough to clean it, if you are going through the process of taking it apart. You might as well purchase a new keyboard and it will be brand new :) Best of luck.

Ok, thanks :-) But is there any danger as long as I just keep using it? And if it stops working, can I just change the keyboard then instead?

You're probably fine if you don't mind the sticky. I had gatorade in my keyboard for a while, and it was gross and sticky, but worked fine. One day, I popped off the keys that were sticky and cleaned them with alcohol. I broke the shift key, but everything else was fine. The apple store gave me a new shift key for free when I asked, so everything worked out. Don't count on getting free stuff, but if you can figure out a good way to pop off the keys, consider it. I was doing this on an ibook g4, so the keyboard was probably a bit different.

I couldn't say for the macbook, but for the ibook, you just pulled gently until the key came off. Sometimes the key broke, though, so you had to be careful. You might also try using a toothpick under the key or something. Just don't break the key. Again, I'm not sure if this works for a macbook, but it worked for an ibook.

Hey folks; if you can remove the keyboard, just hold it upside down and wash the whole thing off with a soaking wet cloth, then let it dry for at least 24 hours, (depending on the relative humidity where you live) two days is better.

I've done this on many different keyboards, even holding them under the tap to wash out any residue, as long as there's no power and you dry off all the water, (contact cleaner might be better,) the keyboard should work fine.

I just spilled about a fourth a cup of coffee on the keyboard of my iBook G4. I immediately turned over and wiped off all coffee that ran out of keyboard, then removed battery, and there was a minute amount of coffee there, dried that. Then directed two house fans directly on iBook. It's now been two hours and I booted the iBook up and everything seems to be working alright. Keyboard, mouse, I can launch applications and the OS isnt crashing. Should I do anything else? Should I remove the keyboard and wipe it down? Should I let it stay off longer and dry out? Or should I keep it on in case it needs to dry out by being on? Just looking for direction? Dont want the computer to crash out on me.

Thanks.

Hopeful in SB

I've got a MacBook Unibody and I'm going to replace the keyboard -- my daughter's wine mishap. I haven't found instructions on how to replace the keyboard on iFix. Can you point me in the right direction. Thanks.
