Do I need a new hard drive?

Reply by tusculum22

Hello

I have a macbook first generation, the very first ones they made in a 13 inch screen. It has always been fine until this weekend.

Okay it is a long stupid story, but clumsy me dropped a heavy book, I was writing a paper for school on the lower right hand corner of the laptop, below the keyboard.

Something beeped and the computer froze and the whirling doom beach ball came up. I didn't know what to do so I did a force shutdown and have since tried to power up but I cannot get past the gray screen. The fans also go crazy when I try re starting.

Do I just give up and start saving for a new laptop or is it maybe a bad hardrive? i have a good backup so I am not worried about any data.

Sounds like a bad harddrive to me, the harddrive is on the lower right hand corner. remove the hdd and try to boot from your restore disc - if it boots normally, replace the drive.

Take this opportunity to get a new 500 GB 7200 RPM Drive like this. I did this recently, and the extra space and performance enhancements have been awesome.
