12" iBook G4, "Blue Screen of Death" after start-up...

Reply by MichaelQuinn

I thought I had a failing hard drive, occasional squeaks, beeps, strange noises from what I thought was the HD, then the computer started to hang up with the BSOD ("Blue Screen of Death."). Then it just started to fail to the BSOD more often, 'til it was only possible to start in teh safe mode.

I was able to back up all important files. I installed a new Seagate 80GB, but imagine my surprise when about 10 minutes into OS install disk 1 I saw the ...yes, the BSOD. I've searched around the web, tried to re-install. I ran disk utility, shimmed the logic board...no success. Anyone out there go a better idea? Please?

Did you try to run an Extended Apple Hardware Test with the iBook's original install CD's?

Reset the PRAM?

Do you have an extra stick of RAM in addition to the soldered in RAM? It might be worth removing it and seeing if there is a problem with it uninstalled.
