Is a New Airport Card The Answer To My Problems?

Reply by bezon

Hi all,

I bought my macbook before school in september 2006.I talked to a tech guy at a local apple dealer today and he agreed I should put in a new card but I wanted to get your opinion as well. The problem began around christmas time. It was very close to a system update but I have know way of knowing if this was the problem. The wireless seems to work better now than it did before, but only a marginal increase, the problem might be temperature dependent, i've found it works better when first turned on or if i use SMC fan control to speed up the fans but i'm not sure if that is the actual root of the problems?

Computer: 13inch Macbook- 2ghz core duo, SMC 1.4f12, Airport Extreme firmware version 1.4.4

Symptoms:

Weak wireless strength- I only get full status if I am within 4 feet of a router, poor reception in places I used to get perfect reception, can't get internet in a lot of places I used too

Constant Wireless dropout- I frequently suffer from the connection being dropped which is especially annoying using msn messenger because it often doesn't tell me till way after the fact when messages havn't been delivered

Bluetooth module unavailable- Infrequently the bluetooth module is not available and can't be used, this seems to line up with times of very poor reception

Things I have Tried:

Reset the pram

Reinstalled OSX

Opened computer to make sure card was properly seated, antennas were properly connected and no wire pinches

A myriad of random fixes I have seen on the internet

So the Question at the end of the day is: Should I order and put in a new airport card to fix my problems?

While I'm at it, I'd like to bring my macbook into the next generation, does it make sense to bring it up to two gigs and add a 320gb hard drive now?

Thanks for your help,

Jordan

I am having the same problem and did the same thing you did. My new 802.11n is in the mail, so I'll let you know if it works better! This Macbook is the biggest pain in the butt, I have replaced the HD, Battery, Keyboard, Charger, and now the airport card, and I have that flashing problem with the display so I am wondering if the inverter is bad. Apple makes crap hardware, but $@*# I love the OS!

Well got the new card, very fast from ifixit.com, and installed it. It was easy to do, but it looks like its something else causing my problem. What's weird, friend with ibook had full strength over the entire house. I don't with a newer mac. It's a bit better, but not what it used to be. I still think this is the last mac I am going to purchase, friend turned me on the hackintosh. I never have problems like these with my PC hardware. It usually just gets old and outdated so I replace it.

I'm having similar problems with my 1.83 GHz MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo: I have excellent wifi signal strength on my second, later gen MacBook Pro and an HP Laptop on the same wireless router, but the first gen MacBook Pro signal strength constantly fluctuates from strong to none regardless of where it's positioned. It looks like a pain, but I'm tempted to replace the antenna.

The antenna cable connectors are seated to the card properly, and the visible cable up to the monitor appears intact, so I'm wondering if the portion inside the monitor is broken? Can anyone provide positive feedback regarding antenna replacement vs. replacing just the card?

Problem solved! I just replaced the Airport card in my MacBook (Core Duo 2GHz). That solved my MacBook's inability to see and/or hold a wireless signal unless it was a few feet away from the router, which problem occurred suddenly a few weeks ago (I didn't have any network connectivity problems before that). I replaced my router with an Airport Extreme base station and I also tried a myriad non-hardware fixes/tweaks suggested on various sites. Nothing worked... until I replaced the card.

I'm wondering, I have a 802.11n card from an Apple TV. But it only has two spots for antennae connections. In the ATV, One wire is blue and the other, black. My late 2006 Macbook has three antennae connections, a grey one at 0, blue on 1 and black on 2. Can I just leave off the grey wire?

I had the same problem with my 2006 Macbook CoreDuo. I could only join to my D-Link router if the macbook was in the same room. Even one wall could break the connection and I could not join again. I ordered a Broadcom BCM94321MC 802.11n card and after exchanging the default Atheros the problem was gone - and it's much faster than the Atheros even for g type connections too. I assume a new card would solve your problem.

To the original Post- personally, for the price, I'd rather get a USB wireless stick. It's a lot less involved than opening up the macbook and installing a new card. They're small and always getting smaller, you can get one with an external antennae, and its easier to match with the brand of router you have.

I ended up buying a USB wireless adapter. It was a quick and inexpensive solution, but it's not an elegant solution. The adapter does stick out the side and I have to be careful about where I place the computer to avoid hitting it. Not a big deal if you work off a desk, but I like using the macbook on my lumpy couch. Plus, for some reason my cat loves rubbing his face against it - which probably isn't a issue for you as long as you don't babysit my cat for me.

I've already replaced a fan, and the hard drive on this system, so I'm past worrying about opening the case. However, it just kills me to spend $80-90 on a wireless card when I need to save that money to replace the power supply at least once a year.
