Looking for Hard disk cloning software

Flag Reply by KozMan Feb 28 2009 @ 7:16 PM

I am going to change out my hard drive on my Mac Book Pro from a 120 to a 320 GB hard drive. Can some one let me know what software I should use to copy the entire hard drive from the 120 to the 320 hard drive.

Cheers

You might want to try SuperDuper!, it only costs about $30.00. You will also need a FireWire cable. Here is the link to the SuperDuper! developer site:

I apologize, you won't need a FireWire cable.

I just did the same thing on a macbook pro core duo2. I used superduper and carbon copy cloner and got the same weird result from both. The dock on the new drive was all jumpy. Couldn't quit some applications and couldn't shut down. I ran techtool pro 5 & drive passed. I know it is a cloning problem because of all the tests I ran but I don't believe that two different cloning software could be at fault. If anybody has an answer, please let me know.

Here are instructions for replacing a hard drive, including cloning the data using SuperDuper!

Carbon Copy Cloner. $Free. Works great.

Super Duper can be used to clone for free. The paid-for version gives one the ability to schedule backups and other cool things. I recommend buying it but if cash is tight (of course) and your needs are specific to the one-time cloning, Super Duper can be used for free.

Carbon Copy Cloner. Used it several times. Worked perfectly for me. Saved my butt. I need to send him some money.

I just upgraded the MBP from 160 to 500gb. I bought an external sata case (cheap for bare case) and put the new 500gb drive in. I used free SuperDuper to create a backup copy of existing drive onto the 500GB drive in the sata case. I tested it by booting from the sata drive (mine is USB 2.0) on another Mac and the backup booted perfectly. I then swapped out the old drive for the new drive using the ifixit procedure shown here. Get the torx screwdriver first. It took about an hour for all the swapping and it took SuperDuper about 3 hours to create the bootable copy. I also run Parallels on the MBP and everything including my Windows started up exactly as before with the old drive. Good luck.

when you change from 160gb to 500gb do you have to format the new 500gb

Any new drive needs to be formatted. After that it can be used normally.

Will SuperDuper clone the drive created by bootchamp?

I think superduper is suitably for tiger

carboncopy is suitably for leopard

and you can use terminal to clone hdd from old to new can type follow

sudo asr -source(drag your old hdd(from finder)) -target(drag your new one(from finder)) -erase -noverify

then terminal ask password of you system type is and waiting for clone

bye

You may use SuperDuper v. 2.5 for Tiger and Leopard and v. 2.3 for Panther. Very good software, I use it all the time without any problem and it's free.

Interesting thread. I too am planning to upgrade my hard disk in my MacBook Pro. I have an external firewire drive that I have been using as a Time Machine backup. Apple claims that it can be used to restore to a blank drive after booting from the install disk for OS X and using the utilities on the CD.

I have a dead superdrive and have one coming from iFixit and will replace the dead one at that time and do the upgrade as well.

I will let you know how it works.

Use Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) and use a sata enclosure/cable adapter through your mac's usb port. Set the APPROPRIATE source and target.

I replaced both the optical drive and hard disk on my 17" Macbook Pro the other day. The iFixit guides were terrific. The tip from one of the others on the board to use a cupcake tin was right on!

After the drives were replaced, I used Time Machine and the OS X install CD with it's utilities to format the new hard disk and restore from the Time Machine store on an external 2.5" external fire wire drive.

Piece of cake. Left it run while I went to bed. In the morning it was done and I re-booted to eject the install CD and everything was as it was before. Sweet! Mail had to re-index the mail on my machine which took a few moments and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I have worked on desktop Mac's and PC's since the old Apple II days. This is my first go at the insides

of a laptop. Not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. The non-metalic spluge tool and the Torx driver from iFixit and my set of small Phillips drivers and a few minutes time was all it took.

Thank you iFixit, with your help I fixed it!

Can I clone my Hard Drive to a new HDD on my MacBook Pro, IF I'm also running Parallels and Microsoft XP and some Windows apps on the current HDD? Or will the Super Duper S/W only work on the Mac HDD only?
