5th Gen Ipod Won't Play Sound. Trouble shooting needed.

Reply by altman

"I have what I think is a 5th gen iPod (white, 30 GB, plays videos). Everything works on it except it won't actually play a song. The screen is on, songs can be found..." -by Brian55 Jun 12, 2009

I'm also having this same issue. But the progress bar runs with songs and video, no sound. I replaced the headphone jack with one that I ordered from this site but still no result...

The funny part is it recognizes the headphones/speakers... By that I mean if I have it plugged in and then unplug it, the progress bar (video or music) will pause. The hold switch also works with no problems. I can also hear noise through the headphones when I turn the volume up and down.

Troubleshooting I have attempted:

-Reset device (center and menu button).

-Powered off (play button).

-Rest settings to factory all around.

-Replaced headphone/hold switch with new.

-Tried multiple speakers/headphones.

-Songs can be heard from iTunes but not the iPod so the songs are not corrupt.

-I've tried using a dock and playing through a radio (Car radio, home radio)

-Reformatted hard drive on device re-added music.

-"Restored" device through iTunes.

-I'm also able to store items on the iPod such as folders/files and retrieve them.

-Upgraded software

I'm thinking there is an issue with the logic board but I’m not sure. Any light anybody can shed on my situation would be much appreciated!!

Thank you,

I emailed ifixit.com regarding this issue and they agreed with me stating an problem with the logic board.

Here is what they stated:

"

I agree that it is probably a fault of the logic board. Sometimes the sound chip on the board will fail and cause this. Here is a link to that item on our website:

I have a similar issue except that the iPod will occasionally play sound ( and sometimes static) if I press, shake or otherwise wiggle the case right. It will play that way until it is jostled again and then go quiet. The issue is from both the headphone jack and the docking port. It seems to a loose connection since shaking makes it go on and off, but after re-seating the cables there is no improvement.

Thanks for the responce! That seems to be the next step I will take to try and fix it... Let me know if it works, and I will do the same.

Thanks-Chris

if you can squeeze the bottom right of the ipod and get a little sound to play, then you have diagnosed that you have in your hands a faulty product from apple. They will stand behind this even if it is out of warranty. I know this from experience
