Spill on Unibody Macbook/external keyboard works - logic board question

Reply by montafonsteve

A small amount of wine was spilled on the upper left hand corner of my unibody Macbook with the result that the function keys worked, but the keyboard no longer functioned. I completely disassembled the Macbook, including a total disassemble of the keyboard and cleaned any residue off the keyboard, logic board, etc. The computer now works except the keyboard! An external USB keyboard and mouse work perfect.

I have two questions. First, with an external keyboard working and all other things working, does this indicate that the logic board is O.K.? Secondly, it appears that the keyboard has circuit traces, etc and no discrete components. However, is this true and what would go wrong with a keyboard like this with a liquid spill.

I am asking these questions as I do not want to assume that the logic board is O.K. just because a USB external keyboard works. It would be an expensive mistake to buy the uppercase, but then find out the logic board was bad and it turned out the keyboard was actually O.K.

That would indicate that the logic board is fine and you just need a new top case. If the logic board was faulty it would not be working properly even with an external KB/mouse.

Thanks Sarabian! By the way, do you know what breaks in the keyboard via a liquid spill? Are there components that you do not see?

I am also in sam position - happnd to me last night. I wonder whether we have to take the whole keyboad off or just the letters that dont wwork??

I'd say the contacts get gunk on them to the point that they cannot work. That's why you can wash some and properly dry them and they work fine again.

I opened my machine because a few keys were sticky. I removed the keyboard and washed it with running hot water, let it dry, and it seems fine now. This process took most of the day because I had to do it twice.

The only problem now is that the lights for the keyboard are not exactly evenly distributed anymore. The lights for q, w, e, and r are dim while t, y, u are really bright, and i, o, p [, ] and the rest are normal. The middle of the keyboard is a lot brighter than the others for some reason. Also, I have a couple screws missing and a couple left over. I stripped 3 of those super-tiny screws on the keyboard and had to drill them out. I broke the connector on one of the fans, too because I tried to pull it out instead of pop it off.

One of the diagrams of the motherboard doesn't highlight a connector that needs to be removed first.

I wasn't able to pop off just the keys that weren't working, you're going to have to really remove the whole keyboard like I did. Use hot water and dry it properly.

So I spilled some melted ice cream on my girlfriends Macbook, around the mousepad and the bottom right part of the keyboard. I cleaned the keyboard right away. The Macbook remained on and functioned normally until the next day when my girlfriend turned it on and the screen was zoomed in, almost like the monitor was on VGA when the graphics are XGA type of thing. Turning it off and on fixed the screen sizing issue, but anytime the mouse button is clicked, a menu list pops up no matter where on the screen the mouse is placed (thus we can't open any programs because the same menu box pops up). Does this sound like something in the keyboard or mousepad is shorting/malfunctioning, or does it sound like something 'deeper'? Is there a way to tell?

We had a small water spill on our macbook. I opened up the case and let it dry out for about 5 or six days. Currently the keyboard on assemby works for some letters but not all. Originally after the spill most of the letters would not work. An External Keyboard was operational. However, while I was checking the keyboard and checking other features, now the computer comes up in Safe Mode only. I was able to log in for a little while but after I tried to insert my OSX disc to trouble shoot, the external keyboard was no longer seen by the laptop. I cannot tell at this point if it is simply the top case with the keyboard that needs to be replaced or the logic board or both or something else. Your help will be most appreciated.

Hi to all,

I originally started this thread and now have another question:

1. Since the spill (a little wine on the left upperside of the computer) I have totally disassembled the computer and keyboard, cleaned it all, etc. About 75% of the keys do not work, but the trackpad does.

2. All ports are functional and an external keyboard works great - kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop!

3. However, I never tested the CD drive. When trying to update to Snot Leopard, it would try and read the disk and then reject it. I tried other disks and it did the same!

Here is my question:

1. I the circuitry of the CD/DVD drive connected to the keyboard circuitry and is therefore problematic due to the keyboard being broken. The computer does recognize the drive in System Profiler.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated as I do not want to replace the upper body/keyboard if there are other issues.

STEVE

I know you have a broken keyboard, but maybe it's your "Snot Leopard" disc :-)

The drive may be bad now because when I fixed my keyboard, the computer was never the same again. It eventually died after I put it in sleep mode once. I took it to Apple for repair and they replaced the whole motherboard, the airport card, and optical drive for some reason.

See if it plays audio discs or DVDs

Snot Leopard! I guess I should proof my posts!! (-: Thanks for the reply - not so encouraging, but probably a reality. We did try an audio disk (several), but no DVD's. Apple will put the whole thing in shape for over $700! What a glass of wine can cost!

i have a unibody macbook bought three months ago :( i spilt a little coffee over the [l,o,p,;] area and mopped it up with a tissue straight away and now the whole thing is stuck in shift (capitals, question marks instead of forward slash etc) and most keys now mute or unmute the sound. an external keyboard works, and everything else works, but it wouldnt recognise the reboot disk, bt im not sure if that was a one off. it still worked and the cd drive worked with 4 audio cds right after i spilt it, but i did see some condensation on the screen over the area where i spilt it.

what part do you think i need to replace, and how much do you think it will cost?

do i take it to an apple store??

My sister Spilled Water on my White Macbook G4 2.4ghz mid-2009 and didn't dry it right away. i came in 2 months later and keys ' i, 8 and F8 ' were no longer working.

Called an apple authorized service and they told me i'd had to replace the whole bottom part. isn't there a way to fix only those 3 keys?

This liquid damage is hardly heard off on another laptop. Apple product sucks!!
