5th Gen Ipod Won't Play

Reply by Brian55

I have what I think is a 5th gen iPod (white, 30 GB, plays videos). Everything works on it except it won't actually play a song. The screen is on, songs can be found, but they remain stuck at 0:00 on their counters. A few particulars:

- Songs can be played from the iPod on iTunes. The song is from the iPod, I think, but can play over computer speakers. So I think it's not the HD. It's possible iTunes is fooling me, but I can hear a whine in the iPod while it's playing, so I think it's coming off the HD

- The bottom 'play' button works, since I can use it for shutdown

- I've tried using a dock and playing through a radio. No soap.

- I reset and restored, of course.

Any help is welcomed. Thanks!

Is the song progress running????, if it is have you tried to use different headphones (maybe you have a Headphone Jack issue. That's really common with the 5 Gen iPods.

If you are sure that the headphone jack is not the problem and you've already restored using itunes then try to format the ipod and then restore with itunes. I recommend to use Mac's Disk Utility.

Hope something works!

It plays videos but no music? Does sound play in the videos?

I've got what I believe is the same problem as Brian55. When trying to play a song the counter stays at 0:00 and the progress bar does not advance. I've had an ipod with a sound jack problem and this is different. with a sound jack problem you can look at the ipod and tell the song is playing because the progress bar and counter are progressing but no sound is coming out. With this unit the song just never actually starts. I've ruled out the hard drive and click wheel as problems by switching them out with known good parts. any suggestions?

I just fixed an ipod video with this problem by replacing headphone jack. I just can't figure out why headphone jack had anything to do with that. Songs always stuck at 0:00 while jack was attached but they played without it. I even tried the same jack on two various logic boards and problem was there too so I ruled out logic board and software cockup. Hard drive also was faultless...I previously scanned it for bad sectors and none was found.

I am having the same issues with my ipod. It hooked up to itunes and downloaded the music fine. When I choose any song, it shows up on my screen but never starts to play - it just sits there waiting! Help - I'm aggravated!!!

You know how when you pull out your headphones during a song it stops until you re-plug your headphones? Prob thinks you are not plugged in ... bad contact. New jack = contact good.
