Intel Mac Mini replacement fan

The fan in my Intel Mac Mini is quite noisy when running, making almost a chirping noise.

I've replaced the fan once before, and now I want to replace it again.

I received a replacement fan, which is an official Apple part, but when fitted, the fan won't start on its own. On power up, it nudges back and fore but then stops. A nudge with my finger is enough to start it running at speed.

I returned the part, and got a replacement part. All parts have the same Apple part number. But I have exactly the same problem, the fan just sits there until nudged, when it will start up. If I plug the old fan back in (same part number) it starts up every time.

Could there be a change in the fan design that needs a different logic board? Is there anything else I can check?

Interesting question. I would check with your part supplier on this. It is possible that the fan you got is not for your mini model. It could be one of two things, either your supplier has provided you the incorrect fan (twice), or they gave you a broken fan (twice). Neither seem very likely, but with your troubleshooting, thats what your left with. Hope this helps.

It seems that there is not enough power to the fan to give it the initial extra boost it needs. Fans take more to get them spinning than to keep them spinning. The chirping noise is indicative of a fan that was never initially lubricated or has lost the lubrication. You would want to be very careful, but you could certainly try a little white silicone grease on the fan shaft where it inserts into the fan case. No lube would also explain why you need to "jump start" the fan. You can usually get the white silicone grease for electronics at an electronic supply store like Radio Shack. No guarantee, but it's worth checking into.
