Repair / upgrade support for Apple TV?

Reply by damacking

Was wondering if you will be including either upgrade or repair documentation for the Apple TV?

We haven't done this yet. We did do a first look on an Apple TV a while ago, but we haven't had enough demand to follow through on it. What do you all think? Is this interesting enough to write a repair guide? How many of you have a broken Apple TV?

I don't have an Apple TV myself, but I think if you guys have time it might be a nice addition. I don't know how long it takes to put one of those guides together, but I'm assuming it takes a while to do it with the quality you have.

It would be great to have one on HD upgrade. It seems straightforward from your tear down, except cloning the old HD. Can you clone the drive using two external enclosures and a Mac or PC with the "right" (which ones?) software?

It would be nice. I have one of the original 40GB and would like to update it and clone the drive.

I'm in the same boat as clnelson: I have a 40GB device and want to upgrade the drive to a size from this century.

Does it help if I express my interest again and then maybe again? :)

Anybody else got the feeling that Apple are either going to completely ditch the ATV or overhaul it soooo much that we'll all be selling our little nearly useless 40GB versions?

If anybody's interested in extending their ATV to run more apps, support more formats, do more stuff, and enable the USB port to run external HDDs then check this guide out:

I've done it and now I don't feel like selling my ATV anymore. It runs a tiny bit buggy but it's certainly made my ATV about 3000% more useful than it was before (i.e. actually useful).

I too want to Upgrade my HD from 40 to 500. This would give me backup to my original files. Please help.

I'd love it if you would do a repair/upgrade guide for the Apple TV. The HD's are way too small and I'd love to know how to upgrade the HD and get better performance out of it.

Yes, I think it is extremely interesting enough to write a repair guide and that there are about as many of us who have "broken" ATV's as corresponds to the number of 40 GB ATV's sold so far, wink, wink. It seems to have the potential to significantly boost iFixit hard drive sales.

Yes deffinitely. It is most handy page I ever saw. I need to put to bits my Apple TV because I'd like to make some additional changes on harddrive, but there is imposible to connect it without removing the covers. So please go ahead.

I would like to see a guide on this as well. Not just HD upgrades, but all upgrades possible.

I'd like upgrade my HDD in my 40GB Apple TV too. Cloning info would be very useful.

Still interested in upgrading the HDD - anyone point me to another site explaining this?
