4SNS/1/40000000: 'TCOP' hardware error?

Reply by deane

Is this a real error on MBPro 15" 2.16Ghz (MBP1.1) machines or just a 'glitch' to live with? Here's why I wrote that:

a) It seems 'solid', worldwide & clustered around MBP's 2006-2007. Many seem related to a dead left fan like mine.

b) FWIW, I iFixit'd both fans & upgraded the tick-tick-ticking HD. The right fan was bad & the left never worked per 'iStat', 'Hardware Monitor', 'smcFanControl'& 'Fan Control'! ... BUT still get the error.

c) I THINK :) my MBP's temps are OK: 59 degsC/140F.

d) There's no way I will pay to iFixit the logic board! Especially when many say even Apple didn't fix the error.

e) And more I forget <sigh>.

Apple Hardware Test error 4SNS indicates a logic board issue. The recommended steps are as follows:

1) restart and retest to see if it "fixes itself"

2) reset the NVRAM using the procedure described here.

3) replace the logic board.

Tanx, Ben.

1. 'No joy' on Hardware Test. Both Quick & Extended still TCOP error.

2. PURE JOY. YES YES & YES!! After 'Resetting PRAM & NVRAM' the 'System Profiler/ Diagnostics POST' says 'Passed' instead of 4SNS.

I'm quitting while I'm ahead :)! And throttling down the fans with smcFanControl to see if the left fan ever kicks in.

Tanx again, Ben.

I'm glad it worked! That's a much happier solution than the alternative.

hi.. i got the same problem, error 4SNS..... on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 17" 2.53 i5, 4gb RAM, 512mb GT 330M, 500gb Hitachi HDD. My screen went haywire (geometrical pattern suddenly emerged while just browsing facebook) Ran apple hardware test and I got error 4SNS. I followed your reccomendation, and after resetting NVRAM, no more error on apple hardware test. My question is, should i go to apple to let them inspect my machine since it's only 9 days old. or has the problem really rectified? thanks for your time
