1.33 GHz G4 12" iBook

Reply by Jojo

I recently received this iBook from a friend who bought it as part of a storage unit auction lot. It was in need of an adapter, which I purchased and finally received today.

The problem is this: I turned it on and I get several icons, but I have no passwords to get into the system. So is there a way to reset it so I can go back to factory default and get rid of these icons?

Start the computer in single user mode by holding down the (command + s) keys.

You will see white text on a black screen.

Don't forget to hit "enter" after each command.

You need to mount the system so type: sh /etc/rc

wait till it loads everything then type: rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

this will make the system launch the Setup Assistant when the computer restarts allowing you to create a new admin account for the computer.

To restart the computer type: reboot

Hope this helps.

Sad to say, no, it didn't help. I heard that this doesn't work on the newer OS...something about a fix in the security.

So, if the Control S doesn't work, anybody have any more ideas?

Or get an OSX disk (cheap on eBay), start from that disk and either:

A) Reinstall OSX with your information (recommended) or

B) Go into Utilities -> Password Reset and change the admin password.

I give this recommendation because the other way was given and you really should have an OSX disk anyway.

Thank you. Sorry, I was having a blond moment. Yes, Command S worked. Thanks again! <3
