MacBook won't boot up at all

Reply by Flyingbike

Hi everybody

Last night i shut down my macbook, everything was ok. In the morning, i pushed the power button, but nothing happened (no light, no fan noise, nothing...). I tried another power adapter, another battery, i tried to reset the power manager, etc... I just noticed that screen becomes darker when i press the power, then becomes green-grey again.

This is not a hard drive problem nor a ram issue. I opened it, everything seems fine.

The light on the powercord plug lights green when plugged, the battery charges normally, so i don't think it is a power board issue.

What could happen during the night ?

Is it a logic board issue or could it be something easy to fix ?

Thanks a lot

Try hooking up an external monitor and see if anything comes up on that. If it does then you're having an LCD issue. If not then it might be video/logic board.

Here's hoping for the LCD or something inexpensive.

thx for your reply, but the fact that the combo drive does not produce any sound as usual and that fans don't move make me think that there is no power in it. A LCD issue wouldnt prevent power led from lighting, i think. Everything seems okay inside.

I just checked with another display : nothing happens. It's like there is no electricity in there.

try holding down the power button until the front light on the bottom case starts flashing or you hear a tone from the computer. This will reset the EFi on the machine. If this works then you probably have not done your updates in a while and should done them ASAP because you will have this problem again.

If this doesn't work then take it to an Apple Store because you need a repair.

hi,

i tried to hold the button at least 20 seconds, no reaction. I've always kept my MB up to date, including firmware. This is like there is no power adapter and battery.NOTHING happens. Dead !

I will take it to a repair center, if they can diagnose it for free.

Thx

There is one more thing you can do to try to fix it but I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you feel comfortable taking apart the computer.

If you want to try it here is what you do:

1) remove the top case

2) disconnect the heatsink temp. sensor connections from the board (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBo...) step 15.

3) also disconnect the fan(http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/MacBo...) step 14

4) connect the power to the computer and hold down the power button until you hear a long tone or see the LED on the bottom case start flashing.

5) If the computer powers on shut it down and then reconnect all the connections and then put the top case back on.

This should do the trick. Some of the macbooks have had an issue with the heat sink causing the computer not to power on and the firmware just needs to be reset without the heatsink. The computer should power on normally after the reset and you shouldn't worry about it.

This has worked for me in the past.

If it doesn't work then you probably need a new logic board. Take it to an Apple Store and see a Genius.

FlyingBike,

Do NOT do this if you are still on AppleCare or Warranty this COULD nullify it. Jethro is CORRECT it is probably a bad THERMAL SENSOR as iFixit has suggested, I am having the same problem, but I will let the Apple Techies deal with it. I hate to wait for them guys to gulp down their coffee and jelly rolls; but I will wait to protect my warranty.

Just would NOT someone that is "adrift in the same boat as me" jump in and get eaten by the sharks!

Good Luck and Hope you get yours resolved quickly as well.

of course my mb isn't on warranty any more ! this is why im trying to fix it by myself. Apple techies will be my last option, since this kind of operation is not costless !

i tried jethro's solution, not better. I think my logic board is out of order... Thank you all anyway !

I have exactly the same issue with a 2.33 MacbookPro. Turns out it is a bad power button. Try shorting together the two solder pads on the back of the button when the top cover is open but still connected. Be careful.

Trouble is, I cannot find just a power button (that is just the green phenolic snapswitch part that is held in place by a retainer snap ring.

Official fix seems to be aan entire upper panel assembly for $250. Yikes.

cheers
