iPhone 3G Home Button Assembly Removal/Re-install

Reply by kkgirls

Does anyone know where to find information on how to remove and re-install the home button and its cable from the front frame on the iphone 3G? My home button (and only the home button, not the mic, dock, etc.) has failed. When I open the phone, this button assbly is locked in by the black plastic front frame. Taking the screen off offers no additional access. I looked at the ifixit front paneland display tutorials, and none of them go so far as to show how to remove this part. I would be pretty sure thatyou can change this since this item is sold all over the internet and ebay. Please help with this as I really can't do much with my phone with out the home button!

Thanks

I am having the same issue. How did it happen? And what did the Apple store guy tell you?

I am thinking on how to fix it or get it fixed.......

Well, I looked into more. Apparently, you can change it if you remove the digitizer/glass front from the plastic frame. Under the glass sits the home button with its two side pegs that hold it from falling out. Then, you can just slip the whole thing out. There is some double sided adhesive that holds the two prongs to the back of the frame that you have to free up to be able to pull everything out the front.

To do this, you need to buy a new assembly/home button/flex cable, and some new adhesive for your digitizer. You might want to change the digitizer while your at it if its all scratched up.

I would highly recommend looking on ebay, b/c these parts can be found for much cheaper.

Use the iFix it tutorial on replacing the front panel for details on how to get in and out of there.

Thanks! After playing with my home button a little more, I found that the HOME button works if I apply a lot of pressure/force on it. Does that mean something is stuck or cleaned, or do I need to really change the whole thing......

Bests,
