Why won't my Apple iPod Classic 5th Generation charge or turn on?

Apple iPod Classic 5th Generation 80GB Model No. MA450LL/A

Around July 2011, on a very hot day, my iPod Classic 5th Gen shutoff while in operation. Before it shutoff, it was quite warm and the battery level was very low and red.

Later that day, I connected my iPod to my PC and the device read "Very Low Battery Please Wait". So I did. After some hours passed I disconnected the ipod from my PC and it immediately shutoff.

I've tried charging the device days on end and with wall charger. I've tried the hard reset method many times and I have gotten zero response from the device. I've tried diassembling and reassembling the device, but that too has had zero effect.

I've ordered another ipod battery that is currently in transit.

I was wondering if is it is possible that the "Very Low Battery Please Wait" message is truly due to a malfuncition/nonfuctiong battery, or is there cause to believe another culprit is at fault?

Responses would greatly be appreciated. Thank You.

iPhone 4 - Weak Wifi Range - Possible Solution

So I got my iPhone 4 back in august. Since day 1 it had terrible wifi range.

I had been searching on and off for months for a solution. Apple couldn't do anything.

So today I decided to open it up and see if I could see anything wrong.

I followed the wifi antenna teardown guide on here. Once I took it apart I noticed immediately a screw that had been stripped during manufacturing.

That did not pose a problem though and once I had put everything back together, my wifi range was greatly increased. So the only conclusion I have is, taking into account the screw stripped during manufacturing, that my phone was not made with due care. So somewhere along the line a connector wasn't clipped properly or a screw was not tightened.

I hope this may help someone else who is having this issue.

Who authored the self-repair manifesto?

Look, I love your website and what you do. I vehemently agree with the first 4 points of the manifesto. However there's something unsettling with some of the other points.

It seems almost self evident to me that if you try and repair your device while its "bumper to bumper" warranty is effective, it's fair that your repair act voids the warranty (unless it's a sanctioned and easy repair, like upgrading RAM). From a company's perspective they don't know if the repairer is educated or not, so they need to cater to the least common denominator. It would be nice if you could express your competence to them and they would trust that your repair followed their process - the "right" way to fix things.

It's like back in the day when you bought a Tektronix or HP scope you got the schematics and a thorough troubleshooting guide - but if you were using the scope you probably knew how to calibrate and fix it anyway. With consumer electronics today, the company rightfully assumes that most sales go to lay people, for whom a little information is a dangerous thing.

So again, I fully support the repair community, but I acknowledge it's sort of a pirate act to open your stuff. I have the right to void my warranty and sever any service and repair contract with the company that manufactured this device.

Powerbook G4 logic board swap thermal paste question

I'm in way over my head here swapping over a logic board on a Powerbook G4 17" 1.33, with the help of a guide at ifixit.com, ifixit has a thermal paste guide but I'm still not entirely sure on how it applies to this particular machine.

I've removed the faulty logic board and the replacement one is on standby - here's a photo of it; http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/3964/... As you can see on the lower part of the image, bottom left corner there is the motorola processor, then next to that approx 1.5 inches square there is a heat sink(?) and then next to that there are 4 squares with a grey diamond shape in the centre - not quite sure what this is.

The latter two have a sort of white gunky foam residue which I'm in the process of removing with a spudger. The inside of the case where these components make contact have corresponding raised shapes, I was going to clean these with Artic clean's material remover and thermal surface remover.

Put simply then on the logic board there are two large squares and four small squares with a diamond in the middle my questions are;

1. Should I use the Artic clean material remover and thermal surface purifier on all of these shapes.

2. Should I spread very thinly the ArticSilver 5 over each of these components?

Thanks in advance

Hello.

I put a microsim with SIM adapter in my old iPhone 2 and now it's impossible to take it out.

The tray is stuck inside. I have tried to pull it with a papelclip but it only moves one milimeter out.

I've thought about disassemble the phone but all the videos and manuals I've seen tell that there is necessary to remove the SIM tray to extract the rear case :(

Does anybody know if there is possible to disassembly the phone with the SIM tray inside? Any idea about how can I solve my problem?

The new Video makes me Sick Shame on you ifixit.com...

I'm not one to post negative comments or post any comments at all for that matter but i felt i really needed to respond to this video. Nothing makes me more unhappy then to see people using the worlds suffering to market there own company by using heart touching video of suffering africans. Yes i agree we should be repairing our electronics more and doubling there life span. iFixit.com is not a non profit organization. They have a store and offer you there parts which are rediculously over priced. I have made a purchase with them before because i believed i used there iPodtouch manual to disassemble a 2nd gen iPod touch. I felt it was a nice way of returning the favor not because it was priced well. Now interms of fixing it your self this can lead to more E-Waste and if succesfully done it can hurt our economy. I have repaired over 300 iPhones in my shop in south FL. My first 2-3 phones where a complete disaster. If your accidently tear off a motherboard lead, might as well Recycle your phones to the africans at this point even your local repair shops might not even be able to fix it. We are professionals for reason. To have a growing economy we need to circulate money and get stuff repaired with our local shops. When i need new brakes on my car i dont winch it up and install them my self i take it to the repair shop. We dont style our own hair. (Speaking for the majority of us) Im pretty sure most of you guys have skillsets you have developed over the years. For our economy to grow we need to spend (Spend Wisely ofcourse) theres tons of homeless people suffering in our homeland due to this terrible economic reccession we are battling. People have lost there wives and children. and people who have taken there own lives because they have lost everything. I'm not posting a video showing you all the homeless people and saying get it fixed by the pros and help our Economy grow.

Sorry to rant im not the best writer i am a repair tech. And like i said this video is just wrong.... Show me your doing something to help these people other then using them to promote your store.

I will not purchase another item untill this issue has been corrected further i have posted on your you tube page and your forums to give you guys the heads up im pretty sure the media would tear you guys up if they got ahold of this.

backlight blackout due to broken cables

It happened when I was moving the display to and thro. Suddenly the backlight went out only to reappear when the LCD reached a certain angle to the topcase. And then the backlight disappeared forever.

The display seems to be ok because upon booting you can still see through the darkened panel the Apple icon and the little wheel.

After having taken the device apart I noticed that the display cable was quite tightly wound around the right hinge which I consider a grave malconstruction. The permanent friction of the hinge must inevitably cause the cables to break. That was what I suspected.

There was no other choice but to take the device to an Apple technician. And he confirmed my notion. The cables were indeed broken, not just one but quite a few. Repair costs: € 140 EUR, about $ 180 - just for new set of display cables.

MacZebra - my customized MacBook

The device was put together from three different MacBooks and all the black parts come from the one drowned in red whine. What you see is a Santa Rosa/Penryn model.

http://www.trecolonne.de/zebra_mb.jpg

The assembly took long hours, but really strenuous was the exchange of the antenna cables running around the metal frame of the display.

Then I had the idea of a white topcase with black keys. All 79 of them I had to lever from their extremely sensitive spring mechanism. For this purpose a spudger made from maple came in handy. Only the tiny clamps(?) on the back of the #-key broke. I fixed it with instant clue.

A remark concerning those apple service technicians. After the redwhine spree harddisk and logicboard the black MacBook were declared dead by a specialist so the former owner put it on eBay.

As usual I took the whole device totally apart and cleansed every part of it more than just one time.

What is really defunct are the RAMs, the topcase only partly: the keys on its right side are ok, those on the left and the trackpad do their job only occasionally. But still...

Logicboard, harddisk, battery, superdrive and all the rest work perfectly. I keep checking them over and over again and not one failure has occurred up to now.

The same story with my MacBook, knocked out by German beer. After a thorough cleaning this device functions now better than before.

Honestly, I don't believe those guys anymore. And with all their experiences they should know better. The more we know about fixing our computers ourselves the less influence they will have on us. Their only intent is to sell, sell, sell - so send them to #!^&! Oh censorship of a harmless 4letter word...Good Lord!

15" Unibody 2.66 GHz Mid 2009 won't turn on, any advice?

Hi,

Awhile back, I was working on my MBP that I bought in late June 2009 when suddenly it just shut off, now it won't turn on at all. The battery level indicator still lights up when you press the button on the side. The only thing I did was when I bought it, I upgraded the HD from 320GB to a 500GB one.

After it wouldn't turn on I reseated the fans but that did no good.

I took it to the genius bar at an apple store and he pushed the power button a few times and said "Oh, it's gotta be the logic board." He didn't open it or anything. I asked how I'd go about getting that replaced since my warranty isn't up until June 2010 but he noticed a small 'dent' (see pic below or larger version here)

He says it's pushing into the screen and damaging it so he said that that voids the warranty and would require they replace the logic board and the whole screen to the tune of $1,700 (I only paid $1,999 brand new).

I tried to tell him the 'dent' happened months earlier and that the screen works excellently. I told him I didn't understand what one had to do with the other and why they couldn't just replace the logic board since it's under warranty. He made some dumb car analogy that if you take your car in for one problem and they find another, they HAVE to fix both, which is certainly not true.

Any ideas on whether it could be anything else? Anyone have any related advice?

Thanks,

I rescued my G1 iPod hard drive with a compact flash card

Wow, I am stoked. My old G1 iPod's hard drive went belly up, and a new one (4Gb) was over $50, even from our good buddies at ifixit, so I looked for another solution, and found a website

http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/753/...-to-turn-your-iPod-mini-into-a-flash-based-iPod

that talked about using a compact flash card instead of a hard drive. It worked! And it was a third the price, twice the capacity, and supposedly (ought to) will use less power! I got the 8Gb Kingston CF card through Amazon for $17 plus $4 shipping.

This has the same form factor as the microdrive, and the same connector, so you don't need to do anything but plug and pray.

I think ifixit should sell these things as a cheaper, better replacement for those tiny drives. Anyone with me on that?

Powerbook 12" 1GHz doesn't turn on...

Hello,

I need to have a diagnostic advice about my PowerBook 12" G4 1GHz that doesn't turn on anymore or better it goes on without screen, without harddisk noise startup. The only signs that make me think that is on are the light on the keyboard when I click on the Shift key or when I click on F5. Then to turn off I have to put out the power plug and the battery. When I put the plug in again with the battery the light on the plug changes from green light to orange for a while, then green again. Which part do you think it is broken? Thanks for any advice!

Where to get iMac Parts

I make my living repairing Apple products. I probably order parts three to four times a week. I also spend a lot of time looking for these parts. I see in your mission type statement from last year that you mainly deal in laptop parts. I also need a good source for iMac parts that I can trust. Some other suppliers sell used parts at new prices and descriptions. In the ensuing year, since your last February statement, has your policy changed toward stocking of iMac parts. If not, can you direct me to a reliable source. I have been flagging questions pertaining to people looking for iMac parts to alert their needs to you. Should I direct them elsewhere? Should I continue to flag these questions? I see several questions everyday where iPod batteries are needed, what is your policy on these? I've enjoyed the repartee I had on your Q&A site for the last two weeks. I've met some very knowledgeable and some not so contributers. I look forward to continued business with you. I got your suction cups in today and they are very nice.

0-;\:?p keys aren't working on my A1181 Core 2 Duo 2.16 Macbook Black. Does any have any experience with this problem? It is making the Macbook totally unusable. I tried a SMC controller reset, but it has no affect. I've also taken the keys off to see if they need cleaning, but they're fine....I even hit the plastic underneath the key while it was off and it still doesn't respond. I would really appreciate some advise with this.

iPhone 3G turns off and resets time/date to 7:00PM December 31, 1999

I installed a new battery in my iPhone 3G a week ago, per ifixit's [beautiful] instructions. Everything went smoothly and when the phone turned on just fine after installing it. However, starting the next day, my iPhone would randomly turn completely off - even right after having charged it overnight. It's been doing this ALL the time... Now it has started happening even when it's plugged in! And each time it happens, when I turn it back on, the time/date has been reset to 7:00PM December 31, 1999. I change it to the correct time, but after it shuts down again and I restart it, there it is again 7:00PM December 31, 1999.

Does anybody have any ideas on what specifically might be the cause of this problem? I would appreciate any thoughts greatly.

Thanks so much.

Intermittent Shutdown Problem with my MacBook Pro model A1150 (2 GHz)

Intermittent Shutdown Problem with my MacBook Pro model A1150 (2 GHz)

Shuts down after running for intermittent amount of time. It appears to me to be heat related.

Here are the hardware specs for my machine, everything else is bone stock.

500 GB 7200 RPM HD (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...)

2 GB of RAM from Kingston

The machine will turn on, if left off for a couple of hours, however it will sometimes not finish the boot process before it shuts down.

If I leave the machine off over night, I will most likely make it to the desktop and finder windows. I suspect that this is due to the temperature of the machine.

I’ve reset the PRAM and the SMC via Apple suggestions (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1365)

Things I’ve tried….

I’ve removed all of the RAM except a single bank of RAM and have tried different ‘sticks’ in it (ranging from the original 512 to one of the new 1 GB).

I’ve booted from the Boot camp screen (Holding down the Option key during boot) and booted from the original Snow Leopard Disk. I’ve gotten to the first screen of the installer and left it there to see if there was an incompatibility with the installation on the HD, and after a period of time it shutdown.

I have the green light on the MagSafe connector and prior to this problem the battery was charging properly (Green lights on the bottom all light up as well as OS icon. However, I was planning on replacing the battery, since after installing Snow Leopard it indicates that I need to service the battery. However, Leopard gave no indication to any problems. Though time unplugged was less than 2 hrs.

However, the machine boots without the battery installed. So I don’t think that the ‘marginal’ battery is my problem.

I have opened up the machine and have witnessed the fans moving. Using a third party utility (smcFanControl), I have gotten them to spin at the maximum (6000 rpm) thinking that there might be a problem with heat dissipation and that maybe the fans weren’t working properly. Still shuts down.

I have looked at this page (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Wiki/MacBook...) and have followed the advice within, still no luck.

I think that this is a Logic board problem, but before I spring for a new one, what am I missing? Could this be caused by a bad PRAM battery? Are these machines known for this behavior?

Any suggestions are welcome, I’m not afraid of teardowns and replacing items.

Thanks.

Site is rather complicated

Hi, I just have a little feedback here on the site:

Some parts seem to be a little complicated, for example, it's difficult to find the links to create a repair guide, create a device, etc., and then once you're there it is complicated as well. When one is on a device page, the link to create a manual just leads to the Guides page, but it isn't very apparent where the place on the Guides page to create a guide is. Also, for uploading photos for devices, there isn't anything which says how to do it, just a link to the CC search portal.

Just had a little feedback on some difficulties I had trying to create a couple of repair guides this afternoon.

Imac Quad CPU swap i5 for i7

Yes I know about warranty etc and it looks like a big job but in theory it should work and you could even go 2.93Ghz i7 since it's within the thermal requirements plus you could use more efficient thermal paste than Apple use like Arctic Silver to reduce the temp by a few more degrees

iPhone 3G Headphone Jack Re-Assembly...

Hi,

I'm replacing my headphone jack at the moment (I have the on/off in silent mode problem) and have a hit a couple of issues.

I'm on the re-assembly stage, and attaching the new ribbon to the on/off switch, volume controls, and silent button.

Q1. The on/off button - does the metal flap that's attached to this sit downwards or upwards (I can't remember from when I dismantled it)?

Q2. The silent switch which lives on the ribbon, when you attached this to the metal bracket do you flatten the two plastic prongs which seat the switch in place, and how do would you safely do this (also how do you know which position to put the switch in)?

Q3. Is there a common adhesive used to stick the ribbon flaps against the headphone jack itself?

Thanks in advance.

P.s. I tried searching the forum on this, but was struggling with the

search functionality and couldn't find anything.

Is there an Ifixit Answers "retweet" function?

Quote from rdklincorporated:

Just a thought -- the more questions I answser, the more I end up answering common questions over and over. Is there, or might there soon be, some sort of "retweet" function so that we can easily link old posts to new questions? Something like that would be helpful, and would save time, especially as a definitive library of questions/answers is built. I think it makes more sense for us all to craft the ultimate answer to each common question Wikipedia-style than to have 500 various different answers on the site for that common question. I've been posting in links to other questions, but it's such a common need, I'm wondering if it might make sense to have something more official.

Anyway, for all I know there's a function like that I'm not aware of. Just curious what your thoughts are on this subject.

Congrats by the way to all at iFixit for producing this amazing site! It's the best answers platform I've seen, and it's only on version 1.0!

Thanks!

OMG New MacBook Won't Turn On

Yesterday, a cup of water spilled (by my cat no less!) NEAR my brand new MacBook (bday gift bought 20 days ago) and at first I was glad it didn't get water on it. Then when I was wiping up the water, I noticed a FEW drops were on my keyboard. I picked up the computer (which was ON) and I wiped the keyboard which pressed a few keys causing some popup action on the screen. At this point, the computer was "fine". I went to close the windows and turn off the computer- but it then just turned off by itself. I unplugged everything and tried to turn it on again, but no deal. My husband came home and turned it on its side placing a blowdryer on low about 3 ft away- just enough to warm the air around it for about 1 hr.

Today, it still doesn't turn on, and I'm afraid to take it to the Apple Store for obvious reasons. Does anyone have any advice?? Should we take out the battery? Will Apple be able to tell if the back has been opened? Will it void the 90 day service agreement?.... or should we just give it more time??? Can just a few drops do this?? I've read about people spilling whole beers into their macs and after drying out, they work fine. I'm heartbroken!!!
