Identification ¶

Road bikes are easily identifiable by their sleek design. Frames have very similar geometries, and are designed to be strong, yet lightweight. Older frames were made of steel, and through the years most road bikes were made of lighter aluminum. Recently, different parts of a bicycle's construction have been made with carbon fiber, which provides an amazing strength-to-weight ratio. Road bikes have narrow tires that are often filled to very high pressures (>90 psi) to minimize rolling resistance. The majority of road bikes have ergonomic drop handlebars with brake handles mounted on them. Pedals range from average bicycle pedals with or without toe clips and straps, down to extremely small "clip-in" pedals that attach directly to special bicycle shoes the rider wears. Road bikes can have any number of gears, though two of the most commonly found are 10-speed and 24-speed.
