Identification ¶

Road bikes are easily identifiable by their sleek design. Frames have very similar geometries, and are designed to be strong, yet lightweight. Older frames were made of steel, but through the years most manufacturers transitioned to lighter aluminum construction. Modern high-end road bikes generally incorporate carbon fiber, which may compose part or all of the frame, and provides an amazing strength-to-weight ratio. Titanium frames are also available, and have been produced for several decades now, however they are relatively expensive and consequently uncommon. Road bikes have narrow tires that are often filled to very high pressures (>90 psi) to minimize rolling resistance. The majority of road bikes have ergonomic drop handlebars with brake handles mounted on them. Pedals range from average bicycle pedals with or without toe clips and straps, down to extremely small "clipless" pedals. Clipless pedals, ironically, attach or 'clip' directly onto special bicycle shoes the rider wears. Road bikes can have any number of gears, with 10-speed and 24-speeds being common among older bikes, while 20 or 30-speeds being standard for new models.
