Identification and Background ¶

GameBoy Advance SP (GBA SP) is a successor to GameBoy Advance (GBA). The SP letters in the GBA SP name stand for "special". GBA SP features characteristic calmshell design. The device's size is a little larger than half the size of GBA when folded. Other improvements over GBA include frontlit (model AGS-001) or backlit (model AGS 101) LCD screen and rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The headphone jack present in GBA was removed in SP and a headphone adapter designed to plug into the same port as the AC adapter was available. The software library and hardware specifications are identical with GBA and GBA SP is backward compatible with GameBoy and GameBoy Color.

GBA SP was introduced in 2003 in Japan, USA, Australia and Europe. The total sales exceeded 43 million units. GBA SP featured a variety of external shell colors including a number of limited editions. GBA was quickly succeeded by a redesigned version named GameBoy Micro and a line of Nintendo DS consoles.
