A printer that uses a laser, static electricity, heat and pressure to print.
All laser printers use toner,a dry powder that dosen't dry out like ink in inkjet printers but because inkjets use liquid ink, they are better for photos then laser.
Comes in monochrome(B/W) or color models
How they work ¶
A laser in the printer "burns" or "draws" the image into the drum(this is why they produce superior quality text and business graphics)
Then, positively charged toner will fill in the negatively charged spots on the drum
After all that, the toner is melted in the fuser onto the paper permanently
Then, the drum is discharged and recharged for the next page but the paper is discharged while being ejected from the printer
Buying tips ¶
Look at the toner yield and if it based on a ISO standard or 5% coverage
Also, figure out how uch you print in a month to determine how many pages on a single toner is best for you and see if you can get a high capacity toner.
If based on 5% coverage, there is NO way you'll get the yield it says you'll get(not a very good way to check yields laser manufacturers!)
The ISO standard is slightly more reliable then 5% coverage so find a model that uses that(or batter yet,a manufacturer that favors it) over 5% coverage so you know you'll be more likely to get a yield very close to the manufacturer's claim, but it may be hard unless there is a EconoMode of some sort(they are all named diffrently),it may just happen.
The ISO standard is ISO/IEC 19752
HP toner overides ¶
Some models from HP have a toner override that allows you to use the printer after the toner chip tells the printer it's empty so you are in control on toner replacement and no,if you use this,HP will not cover it under warranty if you have a color laser printer and you damaged the transfer belt so replace the toner in question when quality declines badly
The override can be accomplished buy pulling and shaking the toner or configured in the menus so no toner shaking is needed
To do this,go under menu,settings,p
*this was based off of doing it for a teacher to save him the sure supply scam,so i remembered how i did it,edit what i got wrong!*
Brother toner override choices ¶
Some models from Brother have a gear and clear toner hole to check the toner left and have toner left even after it says "empty"
If you have the clear hole(s),cover it up on the toner, not drum
If you have the clear hole(s) and gear, find a refill guide for your toner and reset it so you can keep it a secret from Brother you do that trick
or on the starter toner, cover the clear hole(s) as it doesn't have one
Dell and Lexmark toner overrides ¶
Dell's are re-branded Lexmark's most of the time but can be a Samsung
Check the manual or check the menu on these printers
Some print on empty toner at reduced speeds, a new chip will fix this speed reduction, but some new ones seem to stop printing and there's no override to fix this
In general, older Dell lasers just reduced the speed and some stopped printing, while the new ones just flat out stop with no override
Samsung ¶
As far as i am aware, most don't have a override but i could be wrong
Check the manual or menus on the printer
Lexmark ¶
I hope you the best of luck here
