Background and Identification
The Barreto model E718MTH-4S is an 18-inch hydraulic trencher produced by Baretto Manufacturing, Inc. This machine is designed for digging trenches in "normal" ground of reasonably soft dirt and stones up to 3" (15cm) in diameter. Ground that is extremely hard-packed, contains larger stones, high clay contact, or is in a very dry or frozen condition may be unsuitable for normal trenching with this machine. It utilizes a load sensing hydraulic valve to adjust the trenching wheel speed to the load on the digging chain.
The Barreto model E718MTH-4S includes a 1.5-gallon hydraulic reservoir. It can trench up to 18-inches deep at a speed of 148 feet per minute. It has a digging chain speed of 200 feet per minute and a ground drive reverse speed of 23 feet per minute. A load sensing valve on the machine automatically adjusts the wheel speed to the digging conditions. A manual lever lowers the boom and locks in one of three positions for trench depth.
The model GX200UT2 displaces 196 cubic centimeters (cc) and produces a net power output of 5.5-horsepower at a speed of 3600 revolutions per minute. The engine produces a net torque of 9.1 foot-pounds at a speed of 2,500 revolutions per minute. It can hold up to 0.83 gallons of gasoline and 0.63 quarts of engine oil. Honda recommends using unleaded 86 octane or higher fuel for this engine.
The Barreto model E718MTH-4S includes a mostly red body with black wheels and black details. It includes the model name “712-MT” on the side of the trencher’s handles. The Honda General Purpose Motor model GX200UT2 can be identified by its red engine cover, a white fuel tank, and a mechanical box with a black cover. The name “Honda” is printed in white font on the side of the engine cover along with the model “GX” in red font and “200” in black font with a white border.

Repair Technician Information
- The hydraulic oil filter should be changed after the first 50 hours of use, and then every 200 hours after that. It would be good to have one of the 03951 hydraulic oil filters on hand.
- The chain roller on this unit should be greased after every rental. This is a high wear item and failure to grease it will cause rapid wear and failure, increasing down time and cost to operate. This part number is 00265, CHAIN ROLLER ASSEMBLY, 912, 712 TRENCHER, and you will see that the stores order this a lot. In fact, Home Depot purchased 237 of these chain rollers in 2023 so it was one of the higher ordered parts.
- Home Depot started ordering a different chain on new units in the 2nd half of 2023. The new chain is part number 03626-4MS, the description is SMALL CHAIN ASSY 26STA COMBO (18") 52L. You might want to list this in addition to or replace the 03626-4S chain with this one.
