Background and Identification
A scooter or motor scooter includes a step-through frame and a platform for the rider’s feet. Some scooter design elements were present in the earliest motorcycles, and scooters have been produced since at least 1914. The popularity of motor scooters dates from the post-World War II introductions of the Italian Vespa and Lambretta models. Scooters were designed to provide economical personal transportation.
Scooters are popular for personal transportation because they are generally more affordable, easier to operate, and more convenient to store and park than cars. Scooters’ step-through frames and flat floorboards are designed to allow the scooter engines and drive systems to be attached to the rear axle or under the seat of the scooter. Most modern scooters allow the engine to swing with the rear wheel, though most vintage scooters and some newer retro scooter models include an axle-mounted engine. Beginning in the late-1980s, scooters began to use a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Older scooters use a manual transmission with the gearshift and clutch control built into the scooter’s left handlebar.
Scooters generally include engines from 50 to 250cc. A 49cc gas-powered scooter is one that includes a 49cc gas-powered engine. For engines, 49cc refers to the total volume of air and fuel being pushed through the engine by the cylinders. This volume is measured in cubic centimeters (cc).
