Background and Identification
The Volkswagen (VW) Golf is a series of compact cars manufactured by Volkswagen, a German automaker. The VW Golf has been manufactured since 1974 and sold internationally across eight generations. The Volkswagen Golf (Mk7) (also called the Golf VII) is the seventh generation of the Golf compact car and was introduced in 2012. 2012-2019 Golf vehicles include the Golf SportsVan/SV, Golf Variant/Estate/SportWagen/Alltrack, the e-Golf (all-electric), the Golf GTE (plug-in hybrid), the Golf GTD (diesel engine), the Golf GTI (turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine), and the Golf R (three- or five-door hatchback).
Compared with the Mk6 generation, the Golf Mk7 is 20 millimeters wider than the Mk6 and the wheelbase is 59 millimeters longer. The Mk7 also features a roomier cabin with increased shoulder room, rear legroom, and trunk space. It features several new safety features, including Proactive Occupant Protection and multi-collision brakes, as well as other optional features like lane-keeping assistance, driver fatigue detection, and an automatic parking system.
In 2013, the VW Golf won Japan’s Car of the Year award and was the first European car to be given the award. In 2018, the Volkswagen Golf GTI was placed in Car and Driver’s 10 Best Cars for the 12th consecutive year.
Volkswagen Golf vehicles were one of the models involved in the 2015 Volkswagen emissions scandal. Volkswagen installed a software program in diesel vehicles that altered their vehicles’ emissions controls during testing.
Most VW Golf vehicles include the VW emblem, which depicts a ‘V’ placed on top of a ‘W’, enclosed by a circle. Golf models also include the Golf emblem, which depicts the model name “Golf” in capital letters on the rear end of the vehicles.
