My Problem
My six and a half year old iMac G5 wouldn't turn on.
My Fix
I'm not much a fixer with regards to computers. I know how to add RAM, but that's about it.
Changing the power supply was not as hard as I thought it would be.
My Advice
In MJ's video I thought the hard and easy parts were the opposite of her view. Unplugging the cable wasn't that hard, but getting the power supply out was. Also, she didn't mention anything about the ambient light cable. Putting the new power supply in was pretty easy.
To her credit, I would never have tried to fix it if I hadn't seen her video. Maybe it's a good idea she made it look a little easier than it was because if it looked really hard I probably never would have tried.
Although I have a newer iMac, it seemed a shame to throw out the G5 if there was any way to fix it. I had called several computer repair stores in Atlanta and they all said don't bother. It's too expensive. I feel pretty proud I was able to do it myself.
My Problem
The power supply on an old iMac G5 20" of mine failed. Computer can't work without that!
My Fix
A quick trip to iFixit identified the part within a couple of minutes, as well as the necessary tools. A few days later of shipping time, and everything arrived. I downloaded the iFixit app onto my iPhone to walk through the repair, but it was hardly necessary. New power supply installed and computer working happily 15 minutes later. Thanks!
My Advice
Great process. Thanks for helping.
My Problem
Mac power supply went > After doing some research I found that this seems to be a common problem with the older Power PC Macs. The overheating of the supply unit is caused by dust clogging the air intake and fan's.
My Fix
Once I swapped out the part my failful old Mac was back up and running. Paired with the new 1gb hard-drive and new Superdrive 12.7 mm PATA 4x SuperDrive (24X CDR), the computer is almost as fast as my new 27" iMac.
My Advice
Don't be scared to do-it-yourself.... just read some installation guides and/or video's... Google of course, is also a great resource of information. Just remember to ground yourself before touching any of the internal parts and don't wear clothes that create static (like that Christmas sweater Grandma gave you)
My Problem
I've had my iMac 20 inch for over 6 years and it was starting to die the slow death of frequent shut downs for no reason. My sleuthing proved right - it was a common problem. The power supply needed replacing and Apple was all hands-off, too old of a machine to even have the parts!
My Fix
The simple sounding repair was more difficult than I'd anticipated. Though the ifixit "How to" video and Apple guide shows how to detach the cable for the power supply it doesn't show how to detach the ambient light sensor connection and I pretty much destroyed that (which isn't a big deal in the use of the mac). Also, removing the actual power drive was much harder - it just wouldn't come out and my finger got sliced, but now I can boast that my blood is inside my mac! Once I finally got the old power supply out - putting in the new one was easy and all so far is working fine (minus the ambient light sensor).
My Advice
Maybe add a little detail on the ambient light sensor and any advice to help loosen the old power supply which seemed really wedged in tight. Careful with those edges - unless you like to see your blood!
My Problem
I need repair my iMac
My Fix
very nice
My Advice
You can trust a iFixit but if you live outside attention to customs taxes, it cost me € 36
My Problem
First, i've found that the imac g5, switch on, two seconds and off... so i checked the blogs, faq, forums, etc, and found that the power supply was the usual suspect. I love this computer, 6 years of service without stop, without problems, nowadays my wife uses it to surf the net, email, etc... so I made a consideration about this, check prices... you can't buy a new computer as good as it for only 150 $.... so go for it.
The laptop had become very noisy lately, so I decided to chane the fan to fix this
My Fix
everything, with ifixti guides was ok.
My Advice
Just take care when pulling out the power supply is not as easy as it seems.
My Problem
iFixit troubleshooting guide gave me the confidence that the power supply was most probably the problem, Seemed a shame to let a perfectly-good computer die.
My Fix
The old power supply removal instructions could have been more detailed. (see below)
A few scary noises when trying to put in new supply.
Now works perfectly.
My Advice
Should have suggested that the long hold-down screws be loosened and then pulled completely out with needle-nose pliers before moving the old power supply.
Need clearer instructions for dealing with light sensor cable.
My Problem
Nothing exciting, the machine just kept dying in the middle of operating.
My Fix
Repair process took less than 30 minutes. I spent more time swearing at the tight fit of the cable and trying to get the supply past the motherboard than anything else.
My Advice
The spudger is your friend.
My Problem
The computer ran fine except for intermittently shutting down. I read about the common problem with power supplies on these models. May as well get a few more years service out of the machine!
My Fix
Fine. I had done it once before on a 17 inch model. It is a tight fit and offers some challenges in patience, but it went well. Total time about 30 minutes.
My Advice
While inside take the time to blow the dust out of the machine, upgrade the RAM, and replace the PRAM battery.
