2 TB SATA Desktop Hard Drive

$249.95

Product code: IF107-087

Product Overview

We may not know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, but two trillion bytes ought to do the trick. Savor every byte today with our massive 2 Terabyte SATA Desktop Hard Drive.

Serial ATA interface. Works only in iMac G5s and Intel iMacs (excluding Mid 2011 models). This drive has a form factor of 3.5".

If you have a 21.5" or 27" iMac, you must replace your hard drive with a drive made by the same manufacturer as your current hard drive. These iMacs utilize the hard drive's internal temperature sensor to control fan speeds. Mid 2011 machines use a unique way to measure temperature through the power plug, so these drives will not work on those machines. In all other machines you can install a hard drive produced by any manufacturer.

If you are upgrading your hard drive, we recommend purchasing a Desktop Hard Drive Enclosure to easily transfer the information from your old hard drive to your new hard drive.

Stories

My Problem

My original Hard Drive (250 GB) was showing signs it would soon crash and die forever.

My Fix

Changing out hard drives was pretty quick and easy, especially since I ordered all of the correct tools... it's all about the tools!

My Advice

Go slow, watch the video to aid with the step-by-step directions (but don't rely solely on the video), and be ready to ask for help when disconnecting the LCD screen.

My Problem

original HD failed and took machine with it!

My Fix

Really well - excellent guide and step by step process was painless

My Advice

Lining up the case before fitting the screen back was crucial and took a few attempts - otherwise you think you're home and dry and the memory door refuses to fit back on!

My Problem

I started to have trouble with my iMac and called up Apple to help me troubleshoot what was going wrong. Turned out that my internal harddrive was on its way to completely failing! They told me to back up what I could and turn it into one of the Apple stores or a certified repair shop to have them replace the drive for me, and since my AppleCare was up on it there would be a charge for the new drive, installation and the transferring of all my datta from the old one.

My Fix

I was not about to pay a minimum of $300 to have another 320gb drive installed for me so I came to iFixIt.com and found all the info I needed to create enough confidence to believe I could do it my self at a fraction of the cost I would be charged to have it done. Not only that, but I would be upgrading from the original 320GB to a 2TB internal drive! I received my replacement drive and quickly started to get down to the nitty gritty job. The instructions provided by iFixIt were precise and easy to follow. After only 30 minutes I had pulled the old drive out and the new one in! Since I run TimeMachine back-ups on all my computers, I simply restarted my iMac using the system installation disc, used the disc utility to properly format the drive, installed the system software and restored all my info from my most recent back-up and 2.5 hours later everything was back to normal!

My Advice

The only thing I can advise is to get one of the iFixit screw driver sets. I didn't and went to my local hardware store to pick up the star torque drivers I needed. When I told them what I was looking for they handed me a really nice set that was made for working on computers. I turned it over and immediately recognized the logo on the set.... It said iFixIt! The set worked great and made the job easy. I recommend buying the tool kit along with any other recommended things necessary to complete the job you are going to tackle. Having the right tools makes a huge difference in how the job goes. iFixIt will send you exactly what you need to make the job as easy as it can possibly be.

My Problem

the original harddisk died

My Fix

The repair went just as smooth as you showed on your site. Your guides are really good and i wouldn't been able to do it without y'all. Keep up the good work.

My Advice

Just follow the guide, be careful and you'll be alright

My Problem

A friend contacted me after their computer sat for a year. They asked if I would look at it for them and get it working again. I found a dead HD in the machine and ordered a new one. They went from 250 GB to 2 TB on their machine.

My Fix

The repair was pretty easy. The hardest part was getting all of the EMI tape to lift off the screen.

My Advice

Be careful when taking the EMI tape off. If it has been on for a long time it will tear.

My Problem

The computer was knocked off a table, killing the had drive (and denting the floor)

My Fix

The replacement guide was excellent, and the repair took less time than I expected. The only awkward thing was putting together those tiny wire connectors

My Advice

My wife is much happier with the 2TB drive (vs. 500 GB)
