Problems getting disk utility to recognise the hard drive

I've just had to replace the 250gb hard drive after it failed, I've put a 750gb in instead but disk utility doesnt seem to recognise, i've taken it out and reinstalled it checking all the connections but it still doesn't recognise it but I can hear the hard drive whirring.
