Why G3 won't complete booting after software restore process?

After running the Software restore 4-CD set, I get the message to restart or shut up the machine. Doing any of them results in getting stuck on a gray screen, with an icon of a tore folder. Imagine an icon of a folder tore down along a one_o'clock/seven_o'clock line, the two halves facing each other along the tearing line.

Let it be said that is is a machine that is operating (quite normally, unless for that) only on battery. I am about to change its DC-in card, tentatively. But that is another story, I think.
