Headphone jack won't work connecting to outside source

My IPod headphone jack works with the headphones but, no longer works with a 3.5mm cable. It was working with the car input but just quit working. It doesn't work when connected with that cable to a Bose Sound Dock now, either. I have tried different cables & different IPod. It seems something in the Ipod headphone jack is wrong. Should the jack be replace or is it something else?
have you tried shining a torch into the jack and looking for dirt etc which may be blocking the contacts? This iPod is quite a few years old so is bound to have fluff and so on caught up in there...
