temperature warning after replacing battery

I replaced my battery on my iPhone 4s after some water damage and everything seemed to be working fine. After a few minutes the screen starts to dim and flicker and then a temperature warning pops up saying that the battery is overheating and needs to cool down. I removed the battery a few times just to check that I had reconnected everything properly but I continue to receive the same warning after each attempt. My only guess is that something else was damaged when the phone originally got wet.
