Why doesn't my iPhone charge after replacing the battery?

Verizon iPhone 4: was overheating, would not hold a charge, and took a long time to charge, per user. Tried multiple known good chargers.

I replaced the battery but the iPhone will not take a charge. The top right corner of the phone feels warm, but no where near hot.

I feel confident that I did not damage any other components while replacing the battery. What are my next steps?

Thanks!

Replacing the dock connector got me charging, kind of. The phone still sits at the connect power source screen, but will occasionally boot up. By the time I can enter the users PIN, the phone reboots and goes back to the charge screen. Ultimately I took the device in to Apple and they replaced it for a fee.
