Blackberry doesn't load normally?

When I try to turn on my Blackberry Cure 8520 the charging symbol appears on the black screen, after about 2 minutes the lightening bolt is rplaced by a red 'x' across a battery symbol (The blackberry will not turn on at all without it being connected to a charger) it then stays like this until the battery is removed or the charger is disconnected.
HELP.
