How to use the optical sensor for my replaced hard drive?

Hi there
I know this has been a much discussed problem, been reading online for the past 3 days.
I have bought a new 'WD HDD 1TB' to replace my failing 'WD 500GB'. I was following the guide here, and by the time I had to swap the parts from the old HDD to the new I came accros the fact that the backside where the thermal sensor goes has a little indentation that the new doesnt have.
I learned now (after 3 days of reading) that it even doesnt matter if it fits or not because it wont work either way because of the firmware on the drive that controls the fan.
Now I have read many times that people either jump the cable to 'fool' fan, but nowhere can I find how to do this. Or pictures to show where and how?
The second thing I read is that people buy an extra optical sensor and use that external instead to replace the internal. Has anybody done this successful? Doesnt the optical drive sensor have a different connector on the logicboard then the HDD?
I would like to thanks you all in advance!
Greets,
Justin
