iPhone Only Works When Plugged In?

As the title says my iPhone 4 (32GB) does not work without plugging it in. The screen was broken and I recently tried to fix it (it was working before this), I installed a new screen and now it only works when plugged in for a charge. The touchscreen works perfectly but I dont know what is the problem.

BTW the iPhone looked like it was definitely opened up by some amateur (even more of an amateur than me). The screws were quite badly worn out and there was a lot of dust and dirt inside.

So any solutions?

aadil3001, double check your work and make sure everything is properly re-connected. It does sound like a bad battery, or a bad dock connector. Start with the battery first.

What you mean totally take it apart and reassemble it?

Just to recheck your work, make sure that all the connectors are properly seated, you also mentioned that "The screws were quite badly worn out and there was a lot of dust and dirt inside." since you do not know the history of the phone, I would definitely clean it. Take a look at the inside of the connectors, make sure that there is not corrosion in those, make sure the pins are straight. Replace the battery, and the dock connector if the battery change does not fix it. Check the dock connector for bend, broken, corroded pins, clean it with some isopropyl alcohol, reevaluate after.

@oldturkey03

How do you suggest cleaning the inside of the phone?

Thanks in advance.

@Shlomi Hiski, I suggest to follow this guide. Even so it was written for a 3G, all the points are still pertinent, regardless of which phone. To work on the phone, use those guides. Hope this explains it ;-)

Usually when iPhone turns on only when it is plugged in the charger that means that your battery or battery connector is bad.

Open your iPhone and examine your battery and battery connector.
