Is your iPhone jailbroken? A jailbreak can sometimes make it much harder to restore.

If you tried a different cable and usb port and still have this error try this.

Step 1. close out itunes and disconnect your phone

Step 2. turn your phone completely off

Step 3. relaunch itunes

Step 4. plug in the usb end into your computer, but do not connect your iPhone yet

Step 5: This is the somewhat tricky part....hold down the round circle home button while you plug in your iPhone.

This is should bypass any software currently on the phone that is corrupt and do a fresh install. Of course you probably already know that all information will be lost from your phone - so hopefully you backed up before the crash.

And if Mayer's solution fails, you may need to put it into DFU mode. You can do that by following these steps:

  1. Plug your iPhone into your computer
  2. Turn your iPhone off.
  3. Hold down the home button and power button for exactly 10 seconds.
  4. Release the power button but keep holding the home button.
  5. Hold in the home button for another 10-20 seconds. If you are using Windows, you'll hear the device connection sound. If you are using a Mac, open System Profiler and look at the USB hub. You may need to refresh the tree, but you should see a device labled as "DFU Device" or something along those lines.

Cheers!
