How do I go about reseting or restoring my computer?

History

When i turn my computer on it only goes to the gray screen that shows the apple sign then after it shows a bad black screen I do not have a disk so how would igo about fixing it manually

Call 1-800-MY-APPLE and order a replacement installation disk for your machine. Just give them the serial number and a credit card number. The cost is $16 plus tax and shipping. You can then use Disk Utilities and the AHT to test your machine.

Try booting in safe mode (holding down shift while starting the mac).

If that works you can troubleshoot.

If that doesn't help you'll need a disc to reinstall OS X.
