Why is my screen flickering and backlight completely shutting off?

History

This happens periodically, I'm sure it has something to do with the display cables.

Does anyone have an idea of how long or where I could find the cables to replace and which ones will actually fix this?

I've tried doing a display update, which fixed it for about a day.

It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it is very annoying.

After working on laptops for a while, in my experience, 95% of the time it will be the inverter and 5% it is the LCD itself, both fairly simple to replace.

It's probably not the cables. My guess is your display inverter needs to be replaced.

I have this same problem when my brightness is set really low (1-3 bars). I brought my laptop to the Apple store to replace the inverter, but that didn't fix the flickering. At least in my case, I think it could be a problem with the display.

If it's flickering, it is quite possible the inverter cable has just come lose and just needs to be reseated. When the backlight goes off, try tapping your top case near the top left and also the clutch cover around the left side. If this resolves it, then the cable may just need to be reseated.
