looking for a good rework station for nVidia 8600 GPU
This question is archived. No new answers are allowed, and only the question's owner may edit it.
With the growing number of MacBook Pros with the nVidia 8600M GPU issue now sitting on my shelf, and Apple starting to turn down repairs on these machines. I'm looking to buy a good rework, re-ball, soldering station and template for replacing these chips. I'd like to do the best job possible on these machines so I'm not to interested in just re-balling the chips. I'd rather replace the chips with new ones because I like to do the job just once. Can anyone recommend a good station, template, where to buy new chips, types of solder and flux for doing really professional work. Also would it be possible to install an upgraded chip on these machines?
Thanks
I apologize for not getting you an email yet. My original comment was food for thought - not an answer. I've had work, garden and God forbid sleep standing in my way of passing on to you what I will/would like to. I thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter. I intentionally left the original comment/informa tion as a comment. It did not address a multitude of issues, that needed covered, to be a real answer. I've almost got things worked down to some spare time becoming available to properly respond to your question.
ABCellars,
OK, I'll wait to make it an answer. I'm really looking forward to getting this set up as I feel I will be able to help a great deal of people left out in the cold by Apples four year time limit. Plus it's been a long time since I did component level stuff or really had a need to.
mayer,
Mayer - I've just brought in two MacBook Pros with bad GPU's to the local Apple Store here in Boston just last week both have exceeded the time window. The trick I used to get them fixed was pointing the manager to the web sites on the civil suit. He made a call to his boss and they told me because of the suit at present they will continue to repair the GPU's as an extended warranty. You may need to get someone higher up to make the call. Not sure how long they will do this - Give it a try, good luck!
Dan,
Still would like to hear from Cellers on this.
