upgrade memory, HD and cpu at same time

History

Just got a mini A1176 with 1G memory, 1.66 processor and 80G hard drive. I've pulled apart ibooks from clamshells to g3s with no problem. I will be upgrading the memory for sure. What I want to know is if I'm already in there how tricky would it be to A) install a bigger HD? B) upgrade the CPU?

There is a cpu on ebay: ntel T2600 2.16GHz Core Duo CPU SL8VN 2.16Ghz/2M/667. Would this one be appropriate.

I see that opening the case is the trickiest part. Any suggestions beyond the ifixit repair guide?

As an aside: I'm 70 year old lady tinkerer and avid ifixit fan!

Try doing one thing at a time and then test. If you do all three and something doesn't work, what will you look at first? I've done a T7400 2.16 Core2Duo and a T7600 2.33 Core2Duo on this machine (M sockets). The T2600 2.16 CoreDuo that I'm looking at is the same price as the 7400 Core2Duo. The T7600 will give you twice the cache and processor unless you can just steal that T2600. You should be able to upgrade the RAM to 4GB. Again no problem with a 2.5" SATA har5d drive upgrade. Now add the costs up and see if you're getting close to the price of a new machine:

2.3GHz : 500GB

2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5

2GB memory

500GB hard drive1

Intel HD Graphics 3000

OS X Lion

Thank you, mayer. You make great sense. What did you use to open the case? I've seen video of a 3 to 4" putty knife and a smaller one. It's the case that has me most worried. Also, I've discovered the DVI to RCA sVideo adaptor doesn't work on my standard tv. Do you think it is because my processor is only 1,66 GHz? It's a puzzlement. The mini cost me $200 I already have a 320 HD The memory is about $40 With the CPU at round $100 I figure I'll have a pretty sweet little package and a project to keep me busy. Thanks so much, Connie

cpbortnick,

First you really need to try to hook up to a computer monitor not a TV (that's a whole other ordeal on older machines). Watch that video again, as for me I use a pocket knife to first pry it open a bit and then an old credit card. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-M...

mayer,

Thanks, mayer. I am watching the video many times over. The mini works like a darn with a monitor. An old LG analog, I think. It would be nice to get the TV working but I can live without. I appreciate your help, Connie
