Internal blu-ray drive is only recognized sometimes
I have a 2011 iMac which I just purchased a month ago. I also purchased the dual hard drive kit from iFixit and successfully added an SSD drive along with the existing drive it came with. So I really wanted to stay with the all-in-one look and ordered an internal blu-ray drive to replace the existing optical drive. http://www.digistor.com/Teac-Slim-Blu-ra... The drive fits perfectly in my iMac. The problem is that the drive will only show up sometimes. I noticed that it generally shows up when the iMac has not been used or its the first time using it that day which makes me think it may be a power issue. After using the iMac for awhile the drive will just disappear and will no longer be usable even if I try to insert a disc into it. Alternatively, I was thinking that it could be the temp sensor? I was wondering if there was anything else that could be the problem?
Not sure just why or to what advantage you would install this drive. From your own link - Specs
"Unable to watch Blu-ray movies (Apple does not yet support Blu-ray movie playback on the Mac).
Authoring of a Blu-ray movie is supported using 3rd party software such as Adobe Encore or Roxio Toast."
The reason why I chose to do this is because I rip blu ray movies on a regular basis using DVDFab for Mac and then use Handbrake to convert them to m4v format. I use iDentify to meta tag the file with poster art, plot, etc and then I stream them from iTunes to my AppleTV. It works great. I understand that Apple does not support blu-ray playback. I just wanted to try and keep an all in one solution in my iMac - rip, convert, tag, and then stream instead of having an external blu-ray drive attached to it. I also thought it would be a great project since I've seen very little about this online.
