Is the screen dim or is the screen dark?
Not sure if this makes sense, but your LCD display is lit by what is called a backlight. If the backlight is out it makes the display very difficult to see.
It sounds like you backlight on the LCD may have gone bad.
Have you tried turning off 'auto brightness?'
