Why won't my Power Mac shut down?

At first the computer would randomly start up by itself, not only when power was restored. Now the computer wont turn off when shut down is selected. Is there a simple fix?

Tough one. What's the date on your computer? What happens when you power down using the start button? Hit command -option - escape (force quit) and tell me what's running. Do you have virus protection? You can always unplug it, but let's see if we can find a fix.

Could you boot from another external source and check if the problem persists when trying to shut down ?

Good suggestion, also check for any runaway processes using activity monitor.

Try reseting the PMU (Power Management Unit) do this by turning the computer off (feel free to unplug it) then once it's off, hold the power button until the light flashes on and off rapidly, and the computer makes a tone.

If you have not changed the battery on the Motherboard, that might be it. IT can cause strange power up and down problems.

An "iPod shuffle 1GB", MB226C/A, sitting on its USB sync/charging base will initiate start-up if it is turned on and sufficiently charged.
