Wi-Fi only works near a VERY STRONG signal

Wi-Fi only works on my 3G iPhone near a very strong signal. Usually I get no Wi-Fi signal, but if I hold my phone right next to my home Wi-Fi transmitter I get a signal. If the phone is as little as 4 feet away I get no signal. Could my antenna be loose or is this something else? Can a loose antenna be fixed?
I noticed you never got an answer to this. Are you still having this problem
