3DS only charges when plugged in, Store modified

I bought a 3DS on eBay that was apparently to be used for a store display, it does not detect the battery in the system, but I plan on taking it apart to see what may have disabled this feature. Has anyone else had this problem and were able to make the battery work on it again?
What are some ideas that could possibly make the battery work again?
