iPhone 4 no sound at all during calls

I recently purchased an iPhone 4 2nd hand. It had a broken screen so i repaired it. I am not new to repairing iPhones and know my stuff, but this one has thrown me. I found that everything was working great, apps worked sound worked and music etc. I was very happy with my purchase until i made my first phone call. Whenever i recieve or make a phone call there is no sound apart from a faint crackling at all. The person on the other end can not hear me ether. It doesn't work when the headphones are in or when it is on load speaker also, which is making me believe it is a software issue, not a hardware issue? I have read that when making calls the phone uses seperate speakers, but surely this wouldn't affect headphones and loud speaker as well?

I have restored many times on 5.0.1 with no luck, rebooted, reset settings and nothing seems to work. There is no way i can downgrade to see if it is software issue :/ I have also replaced the earpiece.

I can't take it to apple because the warrenty has ran out.

If anyone can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated!!

iRobot,

Just updating now, i am sceptical about it working as i tried it on the 5.1 beta's and it never worked :/ But lets hope! I'll update soon!

Brad,

this is a difficult one, have you tried reaplcing the loudspeaker and ear speaker? does this make a difference

Krayzee,

Did you find a answer brad?

koolkidd225,

Unfortunately I didn't. It does make a good coaster on my desk though so all is well!

but i cant do an update because i need the jailbreak, could you please try that, so that we can see if the issue is because of the software?

Try going to settings and then sounds, then turn the volume all the way down with the slide bar after that turn it back up, sounds strange but has worked for me on multiple occassions!!

you have a faulty screen, I had the same problem when i purchased a cheap one on eBay. I could not get any sound during calls and the other person could not hear me either. I put the old cracked screen and everything worked fine. I complained to the seller and got a refund, I brought another one which was a bit more expensive but it worked fine.

its a hit and miss i have found with aftermarket LCD/Digitizer screens some suppliers are cheap but somewhere in the manufacturing process something got screwed up, other times its good.

take a pair of headphones and plug them in to the jack. Make a test call. If you hear audio and can hear the caller then it is the earpiece speaker. Got to ebay and buy a kit with the part, and tools. SHouldnt cost more than about 4$ us. come back to this site and you will find a manual on how to replace the part. pretty easy, took about 30 min

Hey Will thanks for the response, i have already tried every type of connection for phoning including a Bluetooth connection in a car and it still has the same issues

Change the dock connector mic assembly. The apps all work off of the top noise cancelling mic and the calls work off the bottom mic on dock connector. Phone may be stuck in headphone mode.

Yes this was the case for me, it is because there is two different microphones in the iPhone 4. One just for calls that has noise cancellation capabilities and the other for voice memos and other apps! Still not found a solution, i believe it is because my motherboard was slightly chipped at the top

Hai,

I had the same issue with my sisters i-phone, and i read all these forums. As one said i tried software updation but it cudnt help. IF its the prob, then speaker wudnt work at all like wen v play music No sound wud b der. But this case is different. The solution is very very Simple..

Go to the TOP LEFT SIDE OF UR PHONE THERE IS A BUTTON(MUTE BUTTON).. Turn it other way ..if u have a case, open the square shaped box of the case and do it.

The mute button may b turned on accidentlyso jus turn it off and try.
