screen cracked, blank, will not connect to computer after dropping it

My son dropped his ipod flat onto a hard floor the other day (twice), and then again the next day. It still functioned after the first two drops, but had a cracked crystal. After the third day, it wouldn't respond to touch and now it will not charge or show up when we connect it to a computer. What, if anything, can we do to fix it? What might be the part or parts that's causing us issue?
2/17/12 - glass, digitizer and LCD have been replaced and it still will not boot up on being plugged in and cannot be recognized by the computer. Could it possibly be the volume/power control, or could we be looking at a logic board replacement?
Sara, the best way to determine which parts are needed, would be to disassemble the touch. At minimum you will need a new display. Follow these guides to disassemble. Have you tried a hard reset yet? Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
oldturkey03,
I tried a hard reset, but it's hard to know if it worked. The screen does not turn on at all, and it doesn't make that sound when you plug it in to charge.
Sara,
Sounds like it is time to disassemble it and to take a look at the insides ;-) Follow the guides http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Touch_... for that task.
oldturkey03,
My husband opened this thing up and replaced the LCD, screen and digitizer($20 new on ebay). The ipod still will not respond to being plugged in. Any other suggestions?
Sara,
Try a different sync cable or different port on computer. If that doesn't help you may need a new connector port. Ports are about $6 and a guide to replace them is found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E23AXLjfJ...
