Why can't I get back to the home screen?

I have gotten my nano to work, and it plays songs just fine, and goes to the other options as well. However, whenever I try get back to the home screen I can't. I have tried touching and holding on the screen like the instructions say, but it doesn't do anything. I have had several people try and all have been unsuccessful. I just got it yesterday and so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.
